One first impression of this city would have to be the famous hospitality of Dublin's people. Also, Dublin's famous low skylines which allow great views from almost anywhere in this lively, bustling city.

It's most likely that these impressions will remain the same for Dublin.

English is spoken by all Dubliners and a minority speak the national language, which is Gaelic.

The great thing about Dubliners is that they are not easily offended! But, it is always a good idea to be polite and courteous no matter where you are.

As a foreign resident, what is my status in your country?

All European Union nationals, citizens of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are permitted to live and work in Ireland freely. Also, if you are a citizen of the United States, Canada, or Mexico you do not require a visa to visit Ireland. All other nationals have limited permission to enter Ireland, depending on their particular circumstances, i.e. whether they are working, studying, inter-company transferees, artists, entrepreneurs etc. Nationals of certain countries will also require visas to enter Ireland -- these must be obtained before they travel to the country. What is required to obtain these visas?

In order to obtain a visa, an application must be made to the Irish Embassy in the country of residence or at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland. Are spouses permitted and/or likely to find work?

Spouses of European Economic Association (EEA) nationals are permitted to live and work in Ireland provided their spouse is in Ireland. However, Non-EU/EEA Spouses, married to Non-EU/EEA are not entitled to work in Ireland.

What are the main forms of identification and how does a newcomer obtain them?

The main form of identification in Ireland is a passport obtained from the Embassy of the individual's country. Non-EU/EEA citizens are also required to register with the police (Gardai) and are issued with a Garda National Immigration Certificate. This is obtained at the Garda National Immigration Bureau in Dublin or at the main Garda Station if the individual lives outside the Dublin metropolitan area. Applying must be done in person and providing a valid passport as well as all other documents supporting your situation, such as a work permit, student papers, marriage certificate, etc. are required. Dependent spouse must be accompanied by their husband/wife and must also provide their passport and valid papers.

Are there any other important permits I must obtain, or places where I must register right away?

If you are living and working in Ireland then must apply for a PPS Number (Social Security) at the Depot of Social, Community and Family affairs. You must apply at the nearest local office from your residency.

What items should I avoid bringing into the country?

It is highly recommended that you do not bring any firearms or illegal substances into the country.

Is there anything else I should know about entering and remaining in the country legally?

Individuals with a criminal record or those who have been refused entry to other countries for whatever reason, should be very careful that all documents are in order before traveling. It is also very important once in Ireland that you keep all your papers up to date and do not over stay the time alloted. Do note, it is possible in most cases to extend your stay provided an application for extension is made before your current visa expires. Typically, it takes up to 10 days for visas to be issued.

What is the best way to exchange currency?

Typically, currency can be exchanged at any bank or at the Dublin International Airport. If they do not have large amounts of the currency available that you want exchanged, they will order it for you.

What are commonly-used forms of payment for everyday purchases (such as groceries)?

The most commonly-used forms of payment are either cash, credit or debit cards, checks and laser cards.

Will I be able to use my credit card around town? If not, list when I’ll need cash.

Almost all shops and restaurants accept major credit cards, but it would be a good idea to carry a small amount of cash just in case. Also, you will find that ATM machines are widely available.

By what method are bills (such as rent and utilities) paid?

Pre-authorized direct debits are commonly used to pay rent and utilities. Some bills can also be paid online or at your local bank as long as you bring the bill with you.

What are the requirements for opening a bank account? At what stage of the settling-in process should I open it?

In order to open a bank account, you will need identification such as your passport, a utility bill with your name on it and a letter from your employer. It is recommended that you set up an account as soon as possible.

Will foreign residents be able to find banking services in their native languages?

This will need to be arranged through the customer services representative of your bank. Online banking may be a successful alternative.

Are there any restrictions on services for those who are new to your country?

If the appropriate documents are provided there should be no restrictions on services if you are new to the country. However, it may take longer to receive a credit or debit card, checkbook, etc. due to time delays with overseas credit checks. It is advised that you start such things as soon as possible to avoid any inconveniences.

What are typical banking hours?

Typical banking hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00AM to 4:00PM and closed Saturday and Sunday.

Are automatic teller machines (ATMs) available around the clock?

Yes, these are widely available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Is there any other money information that might help me?

Although credit cards are accepted in most shops, please note that Ireland favors cash transactions.

When searching for a place to live, some important factors to consider are safety, location preference and individual needs. Depending on your preferences, you may want to find a place close to a school, church, transportation, shops, medical facilities, work and most importantly an area that is secure and safe. Choosing the right place to live is essential to having a pleasant and safe stay in Dublin.

Most expats tend to rent a home or an apartment.

Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?

Yes, usually one or two months rent is required upfront. On average, this is 800-1100euro per month.

Are utilities generally included in the price of rent, or are they extra?

Typically, utilities as well as their connection charges are not included in the price of rent.

Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?

As with most cities, some areas are more desirable than others. This is usually evident in the cost of the accommodation. Before deciding where to live, make sure that the house or apartment has door and window protection and a realiable alarm system. Change all locks on doors and replace with brand new ones. Also, it is recommended that you check out local police reports before deciding on an area to live. These reports provide factual information on types of crimes and how often they occur. This will most likely be a determining factor on whether you choose to live in a certain neighborhood or not.

I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?

The electric current for Ireland is 230/250 volts. The electrical Hertz (Hz) is 50 cycles per second, which is compatible with UK appliances. The plug has three pins and uses a 13 amp fuse. If you are coming from the USA or EU you will need a plug adaptor which can be purchased at the airport or at most hardware shops. All the other countries are not compatible. Do you have any other accommodation information that might help me?

Although many expats rent in Dublin, if you are thinking of buying a house you will need approximately 8 percent of the value of the house saved to put down. Further advice can be sought from your local bank. Mortgage advisors can be found in the Golden Pages.

What types of schools do most expats in your city choose for their children?

Most expats choose to send their children to private multi-denominational, co-educational schools.

In most cases kids get transported to and from school by school buses and public transport. In some cases parents drive their children or they form car pools with other parents and they take turns.
