Winter and spring months are cool with daytime temperatures ranging between 45 to 65 degrees. The summer and fall bring warmer temperatures which can reach well into the 100 degree range, with little to no humidity.

The United States has updated its visa policies to increase security, so you will find stringent security measures are in place. Local currency is the U.S. dollar ($), which can be divided into 100 cents.

What denominations does it come in?

Coins (cents) come in denominations of one (penny), five (nickel), 10 (dime), 25 (quarter) 50 (half dollar) and 100 (silver dollar); the last two are rarely used. Bills (dollars) come in $1, $2 (rare), $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.

What is the best way to exchange currency?

Typically, banks offer the best exchange rates, but you will also find that most airports and hotels offer currency exchange services. Additionally, there are also many licensed money changers and foreign exchange offices available throughout the city.

Yes, credit and debit cards are widely accepted around the city. In some cases, you may find that smaller businesses only accept cash so it is recommended that you carry a small amount of cash on you.

By what method are bills (such as rent and utilities) paid?

Preauthorized debit withdrawal is an efficient way of paying gas, water and electricity bills. With this method, your bills are automatically deducted from your bank account. The various utility companies can help you with the arrangements. Also, many bills can be paid online via agency Web sites and with personal checks.

What are the requirements for opening a bank account? At what stage of the settling-in process should I open it?

Banking arrangements should be handled as soon as possible upon arriving in Las Vegas. You will need two forms of identification (one with photo), social security number, and money for you initial deposit. A permanent address is not a requirement and the normally accepted IDs are state-issued photo identification, driver's license or passport and credit cards.

Will foreign residents be able to find banking services in their native languages?

You should consider neighborhood characteristics, amenities, proximity to public transport, schools, work, shops, and type of accommodation. It's best to consult with a person knowledgeable of the areas that you are interested in. It is not difficult to find housing, as long as you are willing to pay for it.

What are the most popular neighborhoods in your city for expats?

Geographically, Las Vegas is a large area and it is best to consult with an experienced real estate professional or Crown Las Vegas representative when considering a move to the area. There are several neighborhoods that people are attracted to which are chosen for their sense of community, citizens and standard of living. Prime examples are: Seven Hills, Anthem, Green Valley, Summerlin and Red Rock. Some houses are in gated communities and these neighborhoods are planned communities with newer housing, plenty of parks for family outings and convenient shopping for daily needs. They are designed with families in mind. For those who prefer a different style of living, there are condominium high-rises right off strip that accommodate high-end living with the Vegas night life.

Do expats tend to buy or rent their homes?

This depends on the person's length of stay. Most expats tend to rent while familiarizing themselves with the area and determining which neighborhoods will best serve their needs. Some expats on short-term assignments will only rent. Others who are required to stay at least three to five years often buy houses. If you want to purchase a house we suggest that you seek out short-term leasing options while you work with a real estate agent to find your perfect home.

Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?

Typically, one month's rent and a security deposit equivalent to one month's rent can be required up front. The costs vary depending on the amount of monthly rent.

Are utilities generally included in the price of rent, or are they extra?

Utilities that might be included when renting apartments, condos and townhouses are trash and water. Typically, rented or leased housing do not have utilities (gas, electricity, phone, Internet, trash and water) included in the cost. If included, deposits are often required for utilities and will depend on the average usage of the previous tenant.

Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?

As is common in most cities, certain areas are less desirable than others. It is a very good idea to consult with friends, co-workers, and Crown Las Vegas to help you select the area that best suits you.

I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?

The electric current in the United States is 110 volts. The electrical Hertz (Hz) is 60. NOTE: It is not recommended that you bring appliances from overseas. Be prepared for the rental management company representative to perform a credit check when you apply to rent a home. It is recommended that you have your employer prepare a letter for you indicating your financial stability. This does not present a problem for expats coming to the area. Las Vegas encompasses a very large geographic area. Single family homes without common walls are available for rent or purchase as well as units sharing common walls (referred to as apartments, condos, and townhouses). Most homes do not come with appliances other than an oven/stove. Some units offer a number of amenities (e..g, pool, recreational facilities) and others offer merely the accommodations. Pet friendly accommodations are not plentiful.

What types of schools do most expats in your city choose for their children?

There are many excellent public and private schools available in Las Vegas and its surrounding areas. Public schools are publicly funded, free, and adhere to a standard curriculum. Private schools charge a fee for attending and usually offer a more specialized curriculum. Most parents choose a school for their children dependent on the child's needs and interests. What are some examples of these schools?

Because of the expansive size of the Las Vegas area, the large number of both public and private schools and the diverse educational needs of children, it would not be in the best interest to provide a list schools here. Please consult with Crown Las Vegas who can assist with providing a list of schools to meet your childrens' needs. Selecting a school here depends on the city you reside in (city boundaries determine the public school that will be attended), and the private schools are determined by living arrangements as well. It is generally a good idea to research homes and schools at the same time, as one may affect the other.

Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?

If your child will be attending a public school, there is no competition. Public schools are zoned so they have to accept all children within the school zone in which you live. Private schools however, typically have entrance requirements and waiting lists. If you plan to send your child to a private school, it is recommended that you apply as soon as you arrive in the area to guarantee a spot on the waiting list. And, Charter schools are like private schools in that you have to register, but instead of entry requirements, they have a "random selection" policy. If you decide this is the choice for your child, it is also recommended that you register as early as possible.

Are pre-schools also widely available (for children approx. 2 to 5 years old)?

Yes. There are many good preschools available in the Las Vegas and surrounding areas. There is a charge for enrollment tuition.

How are most kids transported to and from school?

Most schools operate school bus transportation or parents bring their children to and from school.

When does the typical school year start and end?

As of 2008, Clark County School District is the fifth largest in the nation and home to over 308,000 students. Schools operate on a 'track', whereby some schools operate from the first week of September to mid-June, while others are on a 12-month school with breaks in between.

Are there any vaccinations I should get or other health precautions to take as I prepare for my move to your city?

Generally, no vaccinations are required from any country for entry into the US, however recent changes to United States immigration law now require immigrant visa applicants to obtain certain vaccinations (listed below) prior to the issuance of an immigration visa. Mumps Measles Rubella Polio Tetanus and dipththeria toxoids Pertussis Influenzae type B Hepatitis B Varicella Pneumococcal Influenza Additionally, it is recommended that normal childhood vaccinations of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTP) and polio should be up-to-date. It is also necessary that you bring any medical records with you from your home country and that you consult your home country's vaccination regulations for re-entry on home leave or repatriation.

Before I get sick, what should I know about seeking medical care in your city as an expat?

The United States does not have socialized medical care. It is recommended that you get your own health insurance and take all your information with you when visiting the doctor or hospital. If you do not have health coverage, you will have to pay for health care out of your own finances at the time service is provided. This can run into many thousands of dollars for serious illnesses so being covered should be a top priority. The doctors and hospitals in the U.S. are very good and dependable. In Las Vegas, there are many good hospitals, medical facilities and private practices available to you. Another great way to find a good doctor is by asking your coworkers, neighbors and friends. Often word of mouth is the best resource.

Do expats in the area tend to leave the city/area/country to seek medical care? If so, why and where do they go?

In most cases, no. Las Vegas' medical community is regarded as a vital resource for the entire southwestern United States. Some residents choose to seek medical assistance for advanced illness at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

What is the number to call to summon help in an emergency? List medical/fire/police.

Dial 911 for all emergencies. The person handling the call will direct your call to the correct department: an ambulance, the fire department or law enforcement depending on which is needed.

What do I do if there's an emergency in the middle of the night—or at another time when my normal doctor/clinic is unavailable?

If an emergency occurs in the middle of the night either call 911 and wait for an ambulance or have a family or friend drive you to the closet major hospital in your area. Major hospitals have 24-hour emergency clinics. Identifying the closest 24-hour emergency clinic from where you live is an important first task once you have had a chance to settle in.

How will I recognize a pharmacy? What is it called in the local language?

A pharmacy or drug store. Major chains include Walgreens and CVS. Most major grocery stores such as Vons, Albertsons, Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target have pharmacies located inside for your convenience.

Is the water safe to drink?

Yes, although a lot of people choose to have home delivery or purchase at local stores, as the taste is better.

Not at all. Clothing stores are readily available for men, women, and children, and there are many fine tailors who can customize wardrobes to suit the more particular expat's clothing requirements.
