Settling-In Tips from
Staff in Miami

What is special or unique about your city?

The City of Miami, known as the “Magic City,” is located in Southeast Florida between the Florida Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean. Miami is one of Florida’s most energized and fun-filled cities. Located in the southern portion of the "Sunshine State," Miami is home to a vast array of culture, sandy white beaches, colorful architecture and a nightlife that doesn't stop, not to mention the dynamic football teams: the Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes. With a population of some three million people, Miami is a popular vacation destination for all ages. Miami is also within driving distance to other popular Florida attractions such as Walt Disney World and the Everglades National Park.

A cultural hub in its own right, Miami is also considered the gateway to Latin America, as it has more direct flights to cities in South and Central America than any other city in the United States. Additionally, more than 40% of the residents of the metropolitan Miami area are of Latin descent.

Recognized worldwide as an international hub, Miami has successfully hosted the Latin Grammy Awards, the celebration of the Free Trade of the Americas Conference, the MTV Music Video Awards and much, much more. Whether you live here or are just passing through, Miami is truly a world class destination.

What are a newcomer's first impressions of your city?
From first glance, Miami comes across exactly as it is: multicultural, diverse, different and glamorous. The city is a major trendsetter for the Southern USA and South America in fashion, music, art and more. People are very friendly, but it can take a while to really connect with the locals; as such, it's up to you to make the most of your time in Miami. Fortunately, it's not hard to feel at home in this Magic City.

Are these impressions likely to change?
Not really. Miami is every bit as friendly, vibrant and colorful as it first appears, no matter how long you are here.

What is the local language?
English is the official language of Miami, but due to the large immigration of people from various Spanish speaking regions, Spanish is also a dominant language and is spoken by 60% of the population.

How easily could I live in this city without knowing this language?
If you live in Miami and are not bilingual, it is recommended that you know either English or Spanish fluently. Other languages spoken in the city are German, Swedish and French, but normally only in their respective communities. There are portions of the city where the signs are all in Spanish and few people speak English. For non-Spanish speaking people, being in one of these areas is similar to being in a foreign country as there is a definite language barrier. If you do not know any English or Spanish, it is recommended that you enroll in language classes.

What are good things to remember in order to avoid offending the other residents of this city?
Since Miami is so culturally diverse it is necessary to have an open mind. However, generally people are friendly, laid-back and go with the flow.

How might the local weather affect my daily life?
The climate of South Florida is one of the main reasons people come here, either to live or visit. Miami gets sunny weather virtually every day of the year with occasional rainstorms now and then. The summer months are slightly less attractive as the days can be very hot and humid. If you are not used to this type of humidity you will be very uncomfortable. Most people and businesses have very good air conditioning systems and this helps take the edge off. Also during the months June through November it is the official hurricane season. Although Miami has not been hit by a major hurricane since 1992 (Hurricane Andrew), the state has experienced storms in recent years. So, it is very important to keep track of the weather during this 'season' and to always be prepared. Other than that, most people love it here and never want to leave! It is called "The Sunshine State" for a reason!

Is there anything else I should know about the overall character of your city or its people?
Warm, friendly, fun and sunny -- what more could you want?
