United States: An American Christmas is a celebration of the variety of cultures and traditions which makes the country a unique place in which to celebrate this holiday. The Christmas tree plays an important part during the holidays. The tree ornaments that adorn the tree often represent family heritage and are commonly handed down from more than one generation. Although many families serve a variety of menus for Christmas dinner, the standard fare includes turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberries, vegetables and dessert. Typical desserts include fruitcake, pumpkin, pecan and mince meat pies. Conversation commonly includes past reflections and future hopes. Music is played throughout the holidays reflecting diversity in cultures. Traditions include attending midnight mass, going home for the holidays, parties with friends and co-workers, shopping, more shopping, decorating, singing Christmas carols and mailing Christmas cards to loved ones. The children have their pictures taken with Santa Claus at the mall, and behave extra well prior to the big day, in hopes that Santa will bring them lots of toys for Christmas. Christmas in the United States is the season of giving and receiving. It is a joyful religious holiday when Americans celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is one of the happiest times of the year, especially for children. |
