...Swedish Meatballs are smaller in size than those of other European countries?

Crown Worldwide's 2008 Corporate Calendar, “Crown’s Cuisines: Ingredients for a Happy & Healthy 2008" contains the recipes of twelve international cuisines, prepared by Crown's staff around the world. Here is a brief history on each of those local delicacies.

Italy's Pasta - The word “pasta” shares its origins with the word “paste,” meaning “dough,” “pasta” or “pastry” as in “small cake.”  When Italians emigrated, they brought pasta with them. Made from the flour of certain grains mixed with water and/or eggs, pasta comes in many shapes, textures and varieties, including spaghetti, which is probably the most famous of all. Spaghettini aglio olio con pomodorini, tonno e peperoncino is Crown’s Cuisine from Italy. It means “little spaghetti with garlic, olive oil, small cherry tomatoes, tuna and hot spicy chili.”

India's Butter Chicken - Indian cuisine is characterized by the use of spices and herbs. Traditional dishes are made up of a wide assortment of flavors and cooking techniques which vary across the large, ethnically diverse region. Indian spices are often heated in a pan with oil to intensify the flavor before the other ingredients are added. Chicken Makhani is Crown’s Cuisine from India. Chicken Makhani means “Butter Chicken,” a full flavored dish that complements chicken well and can be prepared mild or spicy.

South Africa's Tart - Many of South Africa’s delicacies were influenced by European settlers. The custard tart was brought over by the Dutch who came to South Africa in 1652. It eventually evolved into a purely South African dish by the Cape Malays. South Africa’s tart has a higher ratio of milk to eggs than the European custard tart. Melktert is Crown’s Cuisine from South Africa. Melktert means “Milk Tart” in Afrikaans. It is a South African favorite, especially at tea time.

England's Beef Wellington - Beef Wellington is named after Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington. Some believe it was named after the Duke because of his fondness of the dish. Others believe that a very patriotic chef wanted to give an English name to a variation of the beef tenderloin dish from France. Beef Wellington is Crown’s Cuisine from England. The Duke of Wellington’s title comes from the town of Wellington which is located in the English county of Somerset.

Japan's Pork - In 1868, a chain of events led to changes in Japan’s political and social structure which had a huge impact on Japanese culture. It led many Japanese restaurants to begin serving Western food, known as yõshoku. Original yõshoku dishes evolved to what is now considered Japanese. These dishes are an integral part of any Japanese menu. Tonkatsu, a fried pork cutlet, is one of those dishes. Tonkatsu is Crown’s Cuisine from Japan. Tonkatsu, meaning “pork katsu,” was originally called “katsu-retsu” which means “cutlet” or simply “katsu.” It can also be prepared with beef, chicken, oysters or shrimp.

Brazil's Beans - The national dish of Brazil is Feijoada, a bean potpourri type dish. It is so popular that all of the restaurants in Brazil, from the smallest luncheonettes to the high end hotel restaurants designate certain days to serving it as their “o prato do dia,” or “special of the day.” It is a festive meal to share with family and friends, particularly on Saturdays. Feijoada is Crown’s Cuisine from Brazil. The name Feijoada, comes from the word “feijão,” which is Portuguese for “beans.” It can be served with Brazilian “Caipirinhas,” the national drink made out of sugar cane.

Sweden's Meatballs - A meatball can be defined as a small ball of cooked ground meat with various seasonings that vary significantly across cultures. Swedish meatballs are a necessity on any Swedish smörgåsbord. Smaller in size than those of other European countries, meatballs are one of Sweden’s most renowned cooking specialties. In Sweden they have a saying, “Mammas köttbullar är bäst,” which means, “Mother’s meatballs are the best!” Swedish Meatballs is Crown’s Cuisine from Sweden, known as “köttbullar” in Sweden. The Swedish word “smörgåsbord” originates from the words smörgås, which means “sandwich” and “board,” which means “table."

Turkey's Eggplant - Turkish Eggplant, known as Aubergine, has a special place in Turkish cuisine. It is a major element of many dishes and is used in various ways. It is baked, fried, grilled, roasted, stuffed, used as a pastry filling, wrapped around kebabs and is even used to make jam. Turkish cuisine is intended to bring out the natural flavor of the main ingredients rather than dominate the flavor with spices and other seasonings. Layered Aubergine Kebab is Crown’s Cuisine from Turkey. “Layered Aubergine Kebab” means “Layered Eggplant Kebab.” Aubergine is the British name given to eggplant, from the French “aubergine.”

Philippines' Milkfish - Milkfish, or “bangus” is the national dish of the Philippines. This fish is one of the many staple diets of Filipinos although it is enjoyed across Southeast Asia. The fish itself is widely available throughout the islands of the region, but the most desirable ones come from Dagupan (which is in northern Luzon, Philippines). There are many milkfish recipes available. Rellenong Bangus is one of the best. Rellenong Bangus is Crown’s Cuisine from the Philippines. The name Rellenong Bangus means “Stuffed Milk Fish.” The name “milkfish” comes from the bangus fish’s tendency to turn “white as milk” when it is cooked.

France's Mousse - Mousse is a form of creamy dessert typically made from egg and cream, usually in combination with other flavors such as chocolate or pureed fruit. The egg whites are beaten before being incorporated into the other ingredients to produce a light and fluffy consistency. Chocolate Mousse was once only a specialty of French and Belgian restaurants, but today it is enjoyed by people around the world. Light Chocolate Mousse with Orange Salad is Crown’s Cuisine from France. The Orange Salad makes an interesting mix and the mint leaves a fresh sensation in the mouth.

Mexican Corn - Pozole is made from hominy (dried maize/corn), pork and other seasonings. It comes in a wide range of styles including “Pozole Blanco,” a basic white variation, “Pozole Rojo Jalisciense,” a red style originating from the Mexican state of Jalisco and “Pozole con Mariscos,” a seafood variation. Pozole is also a favorite in the southern region of the United States. Pozole Guerrero is Crown’s Cuisine from Mexico. Pozole Guerrero is a traditional soup or stew originating from the Mexican state of Guerrero. Guerrero is known as “tierra caliente,” meaning “hot land.”

America's Chocolate Chips - These very small chunks of chocolate were first used in 1933 in Massachusetts, USA. In 1939, Nestle started selling them in “chip” form. Today, they are usually 1 centimeter in diameter. Chocolate chips have been added to many types of foods including pancakes, waffles, cakes, muffins, cookies, pies, hot chocolate, granola bars, ice cream, and trail mix. Chocolate Chip Cookies is Crown’s Cuisine from the United States. They are an American favorite. Some people would even say they are “America’s national cookie.”
