Entry & Exit Requirements


A Visa is required in order to enter the country. For those who will work in China, they are required to obtain a Work Permit. Once the Work Permit has been granted, the employee and the family are required to obtain Residence Permits.

  • What is a foreign resident's status in China?
    There are several types of visas which vary based on the city, the foreign resident's nationality, and the registered capital of the business entity that is sponsoring them. Common types of Visas are noted below. The Visa process can be complicated. Please ask the China Online Help Desk for more information.
  • Types of Visas available?
    • "L" visa: tourist – is valid up to 30 days with a maximum of 90 days and can be renewed twice for 30 days.
    • "F" visa: business – is valid between three and six months and can be renewed for a period not to exceed 12 months.
    • "Z" visa: temporary resident (also for spouses) – is valid up to one year .
  • What is required to obtain these Visas?
    Expats must provide a clear photocopy of his/her passport, ten passport-sized photographs and a resume (signed on each page). If accompanied by a spouse, a photocopy of the marriage certificate needs to be provided. If accompanied by children, a photo copy of each child's birth certificate also needs to be provided.

    Once in China, expats, and any dependants over 18 years old, must undergo a health check. A personal appearance is also required at the public security entrance and exit bureau. Companies usually appoint a person to take care of this and other company documentation procedures that are required.
  • Are spouses permitted to work?
    Spouses are not allowed to work with a Visitor's Visa. However, if they find a job, they can apply for a work permit before starting the job.
  • Do Foreign Residents Need A Work Permit?
    Yes. Once they arrive in China with their Visa, they will get a work permit. This will require a medical checkup.
  • Do Foreign Residents Need a Residence Permit?
    Yes. Once they have obtained the Work Permit, , they will need get a residence permit for themselves and for their dependents who are living with them in China.

Other information

Upon moving into your residence, Foreign Nationals should register with the local police and the consulate of their home country.

It is important not to overstay the time on the Visa. This can result in heavy fines or jail time.

The following items should not be brought into the country:

  • weapons (ammunition or guns)
  • pornography
  • drugs
  • politically and religious sensitive material
  • plants
  • alcohol
