Balikpapan Sponsors SPE Golf for a Third Year
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) held its eighth annual golf tournament on Saturday, October 3, 2009, with tee-off at 10:30 am, at the Sepinggan golf course, in Balikpapan. Approximately 150 golfers, from Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia participated in this major event for the oil and mining city.
For the third year now, Crown Relocations, Balikpapan, has sponsored the sixteenth hole at this tournament with two door prizes (one plasma TV and one DVD player).
The SPE is a worldwide organization that promotes the development of technical professionals in the petroleum industry. Its section in Balikpapan was restarted eight years ago and currently has membership of more than 120 technical professionals. The tournament was opened to only members of the petroleum industry (Pertamina, Total, Chevron, Vico, and service organizations), its sponsors and their spouses.
Play was a five-person scramble format and each team---an even mix of oil and service company representatives---was handicapped and formed by the golf committee.
The purpose of the golf tournament is to raise scholarship funds for local students and provide technical exchange for members of the petroleum industry. A minimum of 10 scholarships per year are provided for university students from East Kalimantan.
Thanks to the participation and cash raised at last year's tournament (US$69,000) SPE Balikpapan was able to provide scholarships for seven university students, donate funds to a public elementary school and donate funds for free surgery to help children with cleft lips and cleft palates.
