With HR-related experience in fields as diverse as nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and the private sector, Laurie's background in human resources dates back to the early 1990s.
She began her work with Crown in 1997, participating in the inaugural Crown University management training program after which she was employed as a Group trainer. She then took a short-term step away from HR in order to help the company develop its newest service offering in Asia: relocation services. Her work on the formalization of a suite of services, with common means of delivery and a corresponding pricing strategy helped change the Group’s approach to what had until then been seen as purely “ancillary services”. From these humble beginnings, Crown’s current Global Mobility Services division was built.
In late 1999, the Crown Group established its first formalized, full-time, dedicated HR management role, based in its headquarters in Hong Kong, and Laurie was asked to fill that role. From that point on, she has focused her efforts exclusively on recruitment, training, review, compensation and benefits, career planning, policy and procedure, and more recently, corporate social responsibility and employee engagement. Following four years in Asia she was transferred to Europe where she is now permanently settled and where she has HR responsibilities for the EMEA region.
Laurie holds a bachelor's degree in religious studies from the University of Otago in New Zealand and a high distinction from the Australian Music Examinations Board (pianoforte). She is also the proud owner of a trophy for "Most Inspiring Effort in a Semifinal," awarded in the 1980s by her cricket club—she held three catches, one of which bounced from her hand and fortuitously lodged itself in the voluminous pocket of her skirt!
