Pet Relocations

Crown Relocations Manila takes care of the entire family during a transfer, including pets. In fact, in 2007, Crown Manila relocated 15 animals to countries such as Australia, Indonesia, the UK and China. Our most interesting animal shipment has been 6 baby crocodiles to Denmark and a family with 1 parrot, 1 dog and 4 cats! Our most famous animal relocation was the move of two pandas, Le Le and Ying Ying, from mainland China to Hong Kong. They now reside at Ocean Park, Hong Kong.

Depending on where you are moving to and from, there are many different procedures and guidelines you will have to follow. Your relocation company is the best place to start getting information on pet shipments, so be sure to choose a company that has handled pet shipments before and comes recommended by other expats. Do not try to go this alone, there are many steps along the way that can be quite easy when done properly but can be upsetting and stressful if mishandled.

The majority of pets travel by air and they can travel either as accompanied baggage (on the same flight as you) or as cargo (on a different flight). Usually, regardless of whether they are flying accompanied baggage or cargo, pets will fly in the cargo section of the plane. However, if the pet is small enough (usually 15lbs or less, depending on the airline), your pet can travel in the passenger cabin. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) issues rules and guidelines to ensure safe transport of animals, such as: proper carriers, proper ventilation, proper preparation before dispatch, feeding and watering, and general care and loading. Look them up on line to learn more about the guidelines.

The most important thing to remember about air travel with pets is to book as early as possible and inform the airline (or your travel agent) that your pet will be traveling with you. Many airlines have limits on how many pets can be on-board a given flight, and depending on the season, pets may be prohibited from travel (usually during the summer months where there are concerns about the heat).

There are many countries that require quarantine before importing a pet, some examples are the UK, Australia, Singapore, and most recently, Indonesia. For these countries the procedure will be different, so be sure to discuss this with your relocation company. The Philippines has no quarantine requirement.
