What are the most popular neighborhoods in your city for expats?

  • Bukit Timah - Located along Bukit Timah Road, this is an area where international schools dominate. It is generally a five- to ten-minute drive from most condominiums. The Embassy of Switzerland, The Swiss Club and The British Club are also situated here.

  • Holland Road - This is another popular expat area, approximately a ten-minute drive to Orchard Road. Holland Village is the nearby entertainment hub and is dotted with good restaurants, fast-food outlets, bars and the Holland Road Shopping Center.

  • Orchard - Located in the heart of the city, you can find shops, luxury hotels, entertainment, offices, private clubs, supermarkets and cinemas within walking distance of Orchard. Due to its central location, property rentals are naturally higher.

  • East Coast - This area features condominiums stretching parallel to the beach. Most are sea-facing. Here you can practice your golf strokes at the driving range, have a game of tennis or enjoy a day of sailing. Seafood lovers can dine alfresco at the popular Seafood Center by the beach. This is also a choice location for frequent travelers, as the international airport is only 15 minutes away.

Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?

Upon signing a 2-year lease, one-month advance rental and 2 months security deposit is required to be paid to the Landlord. The 2 months deposit will be held by the Landlord and refunded at the end of the lease without interest provided that there is no breach on any covenant in the Tenancy Agreement.

Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?

Try to include an alarm system if your house is a stand-alone type. This is especially true for the colonial "Black and White" houses and bungalows in the prime districts, where it is common to have a huge compound/garden surrounding the house. Singapore is, however, a safe city.

I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?

Singapore homes are fitted with three-pin Type G (British BS-1363) sockets/plugs. A travel plug adapter is needed if your appliance's plug doesn't match the shape of these sockets. The current is 230V/ 50Hz.
