What are the top factors to keep in mind when searching for a place to live in your city?
If you are renting an apartment it is important that you liaise with someone who can assist you with reading contracts etc.
Be prepared to pay for assistance in searching for a place to live. If you are planning to stay for a longer period of time, you may wish to consider buying.
What are the most popular neighborhoods in your city for expats?
Some of the popular neigbourhoods in the city are: Oesterbro, Copenhagen K, Islands Brygge, suburbs north of Copenhagen (ie., Hellerup, Gentofte etc.).
  • Oesterbro – see ‘what is special or unique about your city’
  • Copenhagen K - Downtown Copenhagen, close to "Stroeget" (a famous Danish pedestrian street), Nyhavn,Queens Palace, Tivoli and other tourist attractions. Downtown CPH also has a lot of shopping, restaurants and night life.
  • Islands Brygge - fantastic atmosphere, most buildings are recently restored, it has great recreational areas, 5 minutes by Metro to downtown Copenhagen and 10 minutes from the airport.
  • Suburbs north of Copenhagen - houses and apartments in these areas are extremely expensive and prestigious. Copenhagen International School is located in Hellerup.
For those expats who choose to live somewhat further outside the city, there are also terrific options close to water and nature. Almost all areas have easy access to public transportation to and from Copenhagen and the suburbs.
Do expats tend to buy or rent their homes?
Expats tend to rent their homes and this is possible in all areas of Copenhagen.
Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?
Normally you pay approx. three months' rent and a deposit in advance. These expenses will only be refunded if the apartment is left at the exact same condition as received. It varies a lot so please read your rental contract carefully.
Are utilities generally included in the price of rent, or are they extra?
It varies with different contracts.
Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?
Copenhagen is generally safe. But as in all capitals and larger cities there are areas that one should avoid.
I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?
220-230V
