Venice Transport

Will I need to drive my own vehicle to conduct my everyday life (work/school/shopping) at my destination?
It depends on the area of Venice you choose to live in. If you live in one of the islands not connected by bridges, daily travel by boat may be required.

How can I legally drive a vehicle in this city?
If you live in Venice, you will not be able to drive, but if you live on the main land you may be required to convert your driver’s licence. There are bilateral agreements between Italy and other countries permitting the direct conversion of your driver’s license. These countries include Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Korea, Croatia, Denmark, Philippines, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Libya, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Monaco, Romania, San Marino, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Turkey. Otherwise, you can use an international driver’s license, obtained in your prior country of residence, and use it to drive in Italy for one year. After one year, however, you must apply for an Italian license and sit for the written and practical driver's exam. From January 2011 the driver's exam will only be available in Italian, French, German and Slovenian. No English version is currently available.
