Keeping festive while living abroad

As an expat you may feel lonely at times being away from your home country. Christmas can be the worst, especially if you are in a country that doesn’t celebrate Christmas. But there are ways to help make sure you don’t lose your festive spirit.

Put a twist on your Christmas dinner

Don’t focus too much on creating Christmas dinners like the ones you would have before. The country you have relocated to may not have all the ingredients you would need. So work with what you have to create a new just as tasty Christmas dinner for you and your loved ones. Maybe try adding some local dishes to your Christmas feast this year.

Decorate

This will be a great way to make you feel festive and at home, especially if you brought over decorations from your home country. There will be many memories attached to each piece you put up and it should help you beat the holiday blues.

Keep your traditions

If you used to watch a certain film at Christmas make sure you also watch it this year. If you used to go carolling with your family go carolling around your new home. Whatever makes you feel happy at Christmas incorporate that into the new Christmas routine you are creating.

…but try local traditions

You are in a unique position where you get to try new things all the time and Christmas will be no different. Every culture has its own Christmas traditions to celebrate the season. Go out and take part or watch depending on what activities are planned near you. You may find something new that you will want to add to your own families traditions.
