Searching for a perfect wave or just a beautiful island scene? You’ll find it on Oahu’s North Shore. The winter waves attract the best surfers in the world, while summer waves make the North Shore the perfect surf spot for beginners and veterans alike. The months between November and February are the best times to watch big wave surfing. Massive waves can sometimes swell up to thirty feet or more and can be very dangerous even for experienced surfers. During the months of May to September, the waves subside and the beaches are great for just swimming and sunbathing.

There’s a lot to enjoy at the North Shore that include fun attractions for visitors and locals. Charming Haleiwa Town, the gateway to the North Shore, will be your first stop. Haleiwa is filled with local style and country ambiance including cool surf shops, boutiques, art galleries and great restaurants. Haleiwa is quite the opposite of busy, bustling Waikiki, and a great spot to relax.

Waimea Bay was an influential surf spot during the 1950s. Waimea Bay is also home to the Quiksilver Surf Competition, dedicated in memory of Eddie Aikau. The special contest only happens during massive swells when the waves are at minimum 20 – 30 feet. In the last 24 years, the competition has been held only eight times. Beyond the surf, Waimea Bay is a beautiful North Shore beach and a perfect spot to sunbathe and picnic. Nearby, you can also explore Waimea Valley, a botanical garden and cultural attraction that is home to the beautiful Waimea Falls.

Just an hour’s drive from Waikiki, the North Shore is also home to various condo rentals, luxurious Turtle Bay Resort and the Polynesian Cultural Center.
