Getting used to a different culture before you move will help you to have a smooth transition and feel more comfortable.

Research Online communities

There are a lot of online options, forums, blogs and online communities, for example in Facebook, that you can use for cultural research. Speaking to other expatriates who are already settled in your new location can give you very useful and local information.

Reading peoples stories and asking questions will give you a good perception in to your new culture from people who have first-hand experience of living in the country.

If you know when you are moving, start learning Turkish in advance, at least six months before the move. Once you arrive enrol yourself in a language class to take lessons, this will allow for interaction and you will be able to practice what you’ve learnt and make some new friends at the same time.

If you are short on time and money look for second hand books, websites on the internet, and good language apps that you can download and use on your smartphone.

Experience the Turkish culture

The quickest way to learn about your new exciting culture is to experience it. Join as many events, festivals and activities as possible.

Most cities have also international communities with social events or activities, such as visiting an exhibition, seeing a play or even eating the cuisine to feel the new culture.
