The State Fair of Texas – everything’s bigger in Texas!
September 16, 2015
The State Fair of Texas opens on Friday, September 25, 2015 and runs through October 18, 2015.
It’s been a tradition since 1886 and has something for everyone with hundreds of shows, attractions and more than 400,000 square feet of auto show and exhibit space. The DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transport) rail system provides easy transportation.
When you enter the fairgrounds, expect to hear a hearty “Howdy, folks!” from Big Tex, standing 55 feet tall. In the fairgrounds, there are more than 100 free daily performances for all ages. Activities include visiting the livestock barns, fireworks each night, Zuzu African acrobats and the Rocky Mountain horse show. Four stages are filled with live music every day, all included in your admission and there are 24 days of free concerts on the Chevrolet Main Stage, hosting approximately 85 performances throughout the course of the Fair, including the Beach Boys and artist Emilio.
And the food! In addition to corny dogs, turkey legs, fried Twinkies and fried ice cream—yes, fried ice cream—there are many more enticing fried food inventions to try. Finalists for the 2015 State Fair Food Awards include Chicken Fried Lobster with Champagne Gravy, Cowboy Corn Crunch, Deep Fried Alligator’s Egg Nest, Fried Beer-Battered Buffalo, Pretzel-Crusted Pollo Queso and more.
There are daily cooking demonstrations in the Celebrity Chef Kitchen and culinary contests in the Competition Kitchen. You might even get picked to help the chef and sous chef dish up a masterpiece for the audience to try – I was chosen 2 years ago and it was so much fun.
New this year: Beer Haven, a 53-foot-long mobile brewery truck featuring 60 different beers on tap, including fair-themed brews like a cotton candy-flavored ale. Fairgoers can enjoy local brews while relaxing at shaded picnic tables in the grass.
Remember to bring sunscreen, water, a hat or visor, money and good walking shoes. It’s helpful to download the daily schedule before leaving home to check times for performances and demos so you can plan your day at the State Fair of Texas. You’ll be sure to enjoy loads of family fun! Y’all come back now!
