You should open a bank account as soon as you arrive as you will need access to ready money prior to finding rental accommodation. When coming from overseas you are allowed to open a bank account with only your passport within the first six (6) weeks of your arrival, otherwise you need to provide '100 points' of identification. Every form of identification you carry has a certain point value according to this scheme (for instance your passport is "worth" 70 points). Any item that you use for identification, such as your driver’s license (25 points), can contribute to the '100 points'.
