Bangalore Networking

How close-knit is the expat community in this area? How do I get involved with it?
The expat community is very close knit and active. The easiest way to meet other expatriates is to join a relevant group, which will help you connect with like-minded people. A couple of these are the Bangalore Expat Club and the Overseas Women's Club (OWC) of Bangalore. For membership in the OWC, one has to be a foreign national or an Indian national who has been out of India for over 10 years to qualify. The members of the OWC meet twice a month and have coffee one morning a month to introduce new members, as well as organize many events. Some of these events include celebration of Indian festivals such as Diwali, Holi, etc., as well as other festivals like Christmas, Halloween, 4th of July etc. Others might be cultural programs organized for charity.

Beside expat groups, what is the best way to make social connections outside of work?
There are a few good clubs in the city whose membership is somewhat restricted. It is easier to obtain a corporate membership rather than an individual membership; individual memberships are pricey and involve a long wait. The clubs also offer temporary membership for as long as six months in a calendar year. Some of the more popular clubs are the Bangalore Club and golf club. Some clubs on the outskirts of the city, such as the Eagleton Golf Club, Angasana Spa and Resort, Leela Palace club and Spa, are relatively easier to gain membership in.
All the bigger hotels in Bangalore have a bar or pub adjoined. Some of these pubs are very popular within the expatriate community and provide an informal gathering place for expatriates to meet.

Where can I meet other singles in this city?
Weekends are generally filled with parties at clubs and pubs or a lazy Sunday brunch at the hotels around the town, which host a lot of expatriate members. These form a great platform to meet and network with other singles in the city. You can also use social media sites and social networking apps to find likeminded people.

Are there any unique networking opportunities for accompanying partners?
The types of activities available in Bangalore are many and varied. In fact, many expatriates find that their problem is not how to spend their time but how to limit their activities to a manageable number.
There are many opportunities for those inclined towards various forms of arts, be it dance (Indian or Western), music (vocal, instrumental, classical, western), languages, martial arts or painting. For each of these disciplines, it is possible to find a personal tutor or a place where classes are conducted.
The Alliance Française, The Goethe Institute, Ranga Shankara, and many other art and cultural institutions promote the arts and other events and have performances, exhibitions, etc., at regular intervals.
