What are the top factors to keep in mind when searching for a place to live in your city?
Expats, in general, prefer to live around the center of town so they can be close to everything. This usually means living in a small apartment, which is preferable for those on short-term assignments. Private condo homes are being built in the suburbs, so this will be another option for expats.
What are the most popular neighborhoods in your city for expats?
Most foreigners live in the 5th, 13th, 120 Myngat and Zaisan area in UB.
Do expats tend to buy or rent their homes?
Expats usually rent.
Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?
Usually no, but some landlords require half a year’s rent up front.
Are utilities generally included in the price of rent, or are they extra?
Yes, except telephone and water supply.
Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?
Overall, you'll be pretty safe if you avoid going to the rougher areas of the city. Since the crime rate in UB is on the rise, expats should pay more attention to safety than you might in other cities.
I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?
The voltage is 220 Hz and the plug shape is generally two-prong. Most American and Japanese appliances will not work unless you have power converters.
