Describe typical public transportation an expat might use to get around the city.

There are many options available such as buses, DART rail network (Dublin Area Rapid Transit), trains and taxis. The Dublin bus network covers nearly every part of the city and county. They generally depart at regular intervals and the minimum adult fare is €1.

Could an expat also use public transportation to get out of the city—to surrounding towns, recreation areas or suburbs? If so, list options.

To travel out of Dublin, the train operated by Iarnrod Eireann is the quickest way to get to places that are miles away. The DART is another good method of transport for getting to surrounding towns.

In regards to transportation, are there any safety issues I should be aware of?

When getting off buses, always make sure that a bike or cyclist is not coming down the left side of the bus.

When traveling on a DART or train, make sure the train has come to a complete standstill before getting off. Some roads may show a big white square with a black circle in the middle of it; this means "Accident Blackspot." Make sure you take extra care when driving on these roads.

Where do I buy tickets/tokens/etc. for the major public transportation?

A bus ticket can be purchased in any local shop or you can pay by cash when getting on the bus. Tickets for the DART and train can be purchased at DART/train stations.
