How close-knit is the expat community in this area? How do I get involved with it?
As in any foreign country, expats will inevitably seek each other out. There are a number of national organizations, but most are open to anyone of any nationality. One thing to note is that, due to the diversity of people in the city and the ease of using English, reliance on the expat network tends to decrease the longer you live in Johor Bharu.

Johor Cultural & Sports Club
The JCSC ( known as the Johor Civil Service Club ) was formed in 1920. Located at No.623, Jalan Sungai Chat, Johor Bahru, JCSC is the oldest and most established Town Club in Johor. When the club was first established the members consisted mainly of the higher echelons of the Civil Service - namely the British. Outsiders such as Planters and managers were admitted sparingly. The practice of encouraging civil servants to join the club has continued to this day by substantially reducing the entrance fee payable by them.
Johor Cultural & Sports Club has a wide range of facilities for its members such as a swimming pool, tennis courts, F&B outlets, billiards/darts room and a banquet hall/conference room.
Ponderosa Golf and Country Club
Ponderosa Golf & Country Club is only a 15-minute drive from Johor Bahru. The Mediterranean-style clubhouse with a clock tower is situated on a hillock giving it a commanding view of many of the holes. Two blocks of condominiums flank the clubhouse.
Where can I meet other singles in this city?
Johor Bharu has a number of popular night life spots in the City Center. Bars and clubs are the most common hangouts, but activities and classes are also good meeting grounds for singles.

The expat associations organize a number of activities, including educational, sport and social outings. Most of the activities are targeted toward the female accompanying partner, but men may also find some of the programs interesting. Some international schools also offer opportunities for involvement in a variety of programs on a volunteer basis.
