What denominations does it come in?

Typically, banks offer the best exchange rates, but you will also find that most airports and hotels offer currency exchange services. Additionally, there are also many licensed money changers and foreign exchange offices available throughout the Seattle area.

The most commonly used forms of payment are credit cards, debit cards, cash and personal checks.

Yes, credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout the city. In some cases, you will find that smaller businesses only accept cash, so it is recommended that you carry a small amount of cash on you.

By what method are bills (such as rent and utilities) paid?
Preauthorized withdrawals is an efficient way of paying gas, water and electricity bills. With this method, payments are automatically deducted from your bank account. The utility companies can help you with the arrangements. Also, many bills can be paid online via bank or credit union Web sites or by mailing a personal check. Never mail payments in cash.

What are the requirements for opening a bank account? At what stage of the settling-in process should I open it?
It is recommended that you open a bank account as soon as you arrive in Seattle. You will need a photo ID, a Social Security number and money for the initial deposit (normally $100.00). It is not necessary to show proof of permanent residence.

Will foreign residents be able to find banking services in their native languages?
In addition to English, Seattle offers banking services in Chinese, French and Spanish.

Not really, but it is recommended to have a letter from your employer on work history, responsibilities, length of stay and salary.

Monday through Friday - 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Saturday – 9 a.m. – noon. 
Banks are closed on national holidays.

Are automatic teller machines (ATMs) available around the clock?
ATMs are widely available throughout Seattle and Washington. Some banks charge a transaction fee for non-account holders to use other institutions’ ATMs.

Is there any other money information that might help me?
It is highly recommended that you have a credit card available when visiting or traveling in Seattle, as car rental agencies don't accept cash and most hotels will only accept a credit card.
