What are the items that I should bring with me because they’re not available (or are too expensive) where I am going?
Brisbane should have just about everything you would need or want, but the Australian Quarantine places heavy restrictions on the foods that can be imported into the country. In particular, spices, what and dairy based foods. Therefore, it is advisable not to bring any food products into Australia. This shouldn't pose a problem, as Brisbane has a very large range of supermarkets and speciality food stores where you are bound to find your favourite foods and delicacies.

Will anyone have particular trouble finding clothes that fit?
This shouldn't be a problem as Brisbane and other surrounding areas have a number of large department stores and clothing boutiques that cater to all sizes and shapes. It should be noted that, in general, our clothing prices are much more expensive than in the US, in particular.

What grocery stores do expats in your city shop at?
Expatriates usually do their grocery shopping in their local neighbourhoods. Major grocery chains include Bi-Lo, Coles and Woolworths. Trading hours will vary but most major supermarkets remain open until 9:00 PM, Monday to Friday and all day Saturday, and Sunday to 5:00 PM. Local, suburban shopping centres may also have small supermarkets and local corner stores such as Foodworks, but these are generally much more expensive. Delicatessens supply specialist foodstuffs, meat and cheeses from local producers and many countries around the world. There are also many Farmer's markets in and around Brisbane supplying fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood, meat and cheese. Most of these are open Saturday and Sunday only and are a fun way to spend a weekend morning.

Where can other household items (such as cleaning materials and home furnishings) be found?
Home cleaning materials may be purchased at your local supermarket. Home furnishings may be found in large department stores such as Myers and David Jones or at specialty furnishing stores such as Freedom, Ikea, Guests and Dare Gallery.

What are factors that might affect my shopping habits in this country/city?
Standard suburban shopping hours are:
  • Monday to Wednesday and Friday - _ 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM
  • Thursday - 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
  • Saturday and Sunday - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Shopping in the CBD is daily 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with late night shopping on Friday night. Extended shopping hours apply for pre-Christmas shopping.
