Edinburgh is a great place to raise children, with many playgrounds and lots of parkland for children to play in. In addition, there are plenty of public changing facilities available.

What are the most popular kid-friendly attractions in the area?
There is plenty for children to do in the Edinburgh area, including a zoo, aquarium, beaches, museums, parks, swimming pools, galleries and adventure parks. The many festivals in the city throughout August and September often also have activities for children and a chance to get involved. Edinburgh Castle sits on Castle Hill overlooking the city, is a good place for families to explore and is full of history. When entering from the Esplanade the parade ground is the site of the Changing of the Guards, a ceremony which takes place every hour.

Kids enjoy sports, going to the cinema and visiting shopping centres to meet friends.

There is plenty to do for teenagers throughout Edinburgh, both in general and various specific events throughout the year. Parents should be aware that the drinking age in Scotland is 18.

Most areas have youth clubs. Your local school will be able to tell you about the youth clubs in your area. There are also Scouts and Girl Guides clubs for boys and girls. These groups offer adventures, amusements and activities.

There are often open days at castles and museums throughout the summer, where children can take part in a number of activities to learn about the local heritage and culture. The Children’s Festival in August is also a great chance to learn more about the area.
