The public transport system in Pretoria is very limited and in some instances, not particularly safe, so it is essential to have access to a vehicle for day-to-day transportation purposes.

How can I legally drive a vehicle in this city?
Although an international driver’s license is advisable, it is not essential, as long as the home country driver’s license is valid and in English, and a photograph is part of the document. Your driver’s license must be carried with you at all times.

What side of the road do people drive on?
South Africa drives on the left-hand side of the road in right-hand drive vehicles. The speed limit in built-up areas is 60 kilometers per hour and 120 kilometers per hour on the motorways. Speed limits are clearly posted on signs.

An expat would not use public transportation to get around the city, other than maybe a sightseeing coach tour to familiarize themselves with the area.

There are coach services that link the major cities in South Africa and are perfectly safe to use. These include Greyhound, Translux and Intercape, whose contact details appear in the telephone directory.
