What types of schools do most expats in your city choose for their children?
Expats coming to Munich can choose from several international schools as well as local schools.
What are some examples of these schools?
The Munich International School at Starnberg and the Bavarian International School at Haimhausen are mostly attended by assignees. There is also a French, a Japanese and a European school in
Munich. Local schools are located throughout the city region.
Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?
The local schools are subordinated and financed by government. Children are allocated to the basic school that belongs to their area of residence. There is no competition, but also no freedom of decision. It is possible to join a private school. Munich does not have many private schools, therefore there is competition for spots.
Are pre-schools also widely available (for children approx. 2 to 5 years old)?
Childcare before starting school is divided into infant care (0-3 years) and kindergarten (3-6 years).
Infant care facilities may have a waiting period up to one year. Places for children over 3 years in kindergarten are normally available in every city area. There are also multilingual pre-schools.
How are most kids transported to and from school?
Private and international schools normally have a good transport system. Parents usually provide transportation to local school.
When does the typical school year start and end?
The school year at the international schools usually starts in September and lasts until June/July, however local German schools begin their term in August.
Is there anything else I should know about local schools?
The school system starts with primary school for children from 6 to 9 years. After this time, the school system is divided into three types of secondary schools: The secondary modern school, the junior high school and the gymnasium. Children have to choose after primary school (the decision is also based on merit), but the system also allows students to change schools at certain times.
