Are there any vaccinations I should get or other health precautions to take as I prepare for my move to your city?
There are no specific medical precautions you should take before coming to the UAE, although it's never a bad idea to bring a copy of your medical records with you. Also, you might want to bring a small supply of any prescriptions you might need; though most medications are readily available in the UAE, you might want to have some on hand for the transition period.
Before I get sick, what should I know about seeking medical care in your city as an expat?
Medical care at public hospitals is sufficient; however, the majority of expats seek medical care from private clinics/hospitals. All employees (and dependants) are eligible for medical treatment at government hospitals (provided they have a health card, which is generally arranged by the company).
In emergency situations, the hospitals would treat patients, but would expect them to pay should they not have insurance (furnished by the employer on most occasions).
What is the word for "doctor" in the local language?
What is the best way to locate a suitable health care provider?
Word of mouth is very efficient in the expat community and is one of the best ways to find out about suitable doctors.
Do expats in the area tend to leave the city/area/country to seek medical care? If so, why and where do they go?
No, as the level of medical care in private hospitals is quite high.
What is the number to call to summon help in an emergency? List medical/fire/police.
Dial 999 (applies to ambulance, fire and police).
What do I do if there's an emergency in the middle of the night—or at another time when my normal doctor/clinic is unavailable?
Either dial 999 or drive to the hospital. (All are open 24 hours a day).
How will I recognize a pharmacy? What is it called in the local language?
All pharmacies have signs in English that clearly identify them as such.
Is the water safe to drink?
Yes, however, the majority of expats prefer to buy bottled or mineral water.
