Planning your retirement abroad

Retiring is a new chance to relax and enjoy all the things you’ve wanted to do. Retiring abroad is one way that people like to celebrate their retirement and start the next chapter of their life. However the success of a new life abroad always begins with careful planning. Here are our tips for a smooth transition when retiring abroad:

Take care of your health

Depending on where you plan on retiring it may be important that you apply for medical insurance. Research the health cover that you are entitled as a retiring expat from Belgium. For your health needs you may find that you require additional private cover. Also keep in mind there are some countries such as America or South Africa that require all residents to have health insurance.

Research your finances

It’s important to make sure you will be financially stable when you emigrate abroad. Contact the International Pension Centre, they can give you advice on how your pension could be affected. Whilst the adventure of retiring abroad is tempting you want to make sure you're in the best position to live comfortably after the move. If need be you can wait a little bit longer and relocate when you are in a better financial situation.

Take your time deciding

If you are not moving to be nearer to family or friends take the time to research where the perfect place for you will be. You may have decided on the country but finding the perfect neighbourhood for you and your needs could take time. Make sure that you visit a few times before deciding on anywhere. You will find out what your potential neighbours are like as well if you can picture yourself anywhere in particular. Going to a new country for a holiday is very different than the reality of living there as a permanent resident.

Don’t rush your retirement abroad and plan for every possibility. Then you will travel safely knowing that your new life will be everything you envisioned.
