Will anyone have particular trouble finding clothes that fit?

New York has every kind of shopping possible. There are beautiful department stores such as Macy’s (which claims to be the world's largest department store), Bloomingdale’s on the East Side and Saks Fifth Avenue (which is surrounded by fine boutiques on the elegant and tourist-filled Fifth Avenue). Other major shopping streets are Madison Avenue and Columbus Avenue on the Upper East and West Sides, respectively. Soho and Tribeca offer many modern boutiques and galleries. In the warmer months, there are street fairs with stalls from local artists and small businesses all over the city. These fairs will be listed in Time Out New York and New York magazines.

Some street vendors also sell food, ranging from fruit to breakfast coffee and bagels to lunch items. Shopping in New York, however, is generally expensive compared to the suburbs. Sales taxes are also higher in New York City. Many people travel to New Jersey to buy clothes since there is no sales tax on clothing.

In the suburban areas, there are major malls with a multitude of shops, including department stores and small shops, under one roof. These malls are accessible for those living outside of New York City in places such as Westchester County, New York; Fairfield County, Connecticut, and throughout New Jersey.

What grocery stores do expats in your city shop at?

For food shopping, Manhattan features many little shops (called "bodegas") that are open 24 hours a day. However, the city does not have as many large supermarkets with a large selection or large sizes. City residents do much of their shopping from small “mom and pop” markets. In the suburbs, it is common to find large supermarkets and even larger “superstores” which sell bulk quantities of food and household supplies at discounted prices.
