Trains go out of the city. You could also rent a car. A mini-bus is another option; these are small, air-conditioned and clean.
In regards to transportation, are there any safety issues I should be aware of?
Traffic laws in Vietnam are not strictly enforced, and driver's education is limited. Therefore, patience on the roads is mandatory. Hiring your own driver will ease some of these headaches.
Where do I buy tickets/tokens/etc. for the major public transportation?
You can buy tickets at bus stations or from travel agents.
