How well-equipped is this city for those raising infants/toddlers? Specifically, are there public places to change diapers, maintained playgrounds, etc?
Aberdeen is a fantastic city for raising children. There are public change rooms, many parks and playgrounds (usually a couple within each neighbourhood) and loads of parkland for children to play in.
Check online or in the Yellow Pages.
As with any large city or indeed any location, parental guidance and responsibility are important to a child's safety.
Along the Aberdeen beach front there is Sunset Boulevard, which incorporates an amusement park with all the popular fairground attractions and rides, an ice skating rink, indoor swimming complex and multi-screen cinema.
For the young scientists, there is Satrosphere, a wonderful hands-on children's science museum.
The most popular activities for kids are participating in sport, going to the cinema and visiting shopping centers to meet friends.
What's it like to be a teenager in this city? Are there any particular challenges I should be aware of as a parent?
Growing up in a city brings many challenges with it, however, in Aberdeen there are plenty of societies and clubs to join and also extra-curricular activities linked to schools. These all help teenagers to become part of the community.
Are there any organizations/social groups in the area that cater exclusively to young people ages 12-17?
Your local school will be able to tell you about the youth clubs in your area. There are also scouting clubs for boys and girls. These groups offer adventures, amusements and activities.
I want my child to get the most out of our stay in this country. Are there any specific opportunities to teach young people about the local culture?
Throughout the spring and summer months, there are often open days at castles and museums.
During these open days there can be children's activities to learn about the local heritage and culture.
Also, during the summer there are local festivals which take into account the importance of the sea and the land to this area.
