How close-knit is the expat community in this area? How do I get involved with it?
The community is very friendly and there are many activities to keep them entertained. Clubs and groups are available to meet and mix with other expatriates and locals alike. Some groups include: Alliance Francaise de Dar, bridge clubs, British Council, Caledonian Society, Corona Society, Dar es Salaam Choral Society, Dar Hash Harriers, Dar es Salaam Yacht Club, diplomatic spouses group, Gymkhana Sports Club, Irish Society, Little Theatre, Dar es Salaam Players, mah-jongg, ribbon embroidery group, Royal Society of St. George, Russian Tanzanian Cultural Centre, sewing group, Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania.
There are many radio stations and TV stations, such as DSTV, Startimes and ZUKU TV. Social life is not restricted to going to the movies and going out to eat and drink.
Beside expat groups, what is the best way to make social connections outside of work?
There are several groups who welcome (karibu) newcomers. The Crown country manager can introduce them accordingly.
Where can I meet other singles in this city?
There are night clubs and many bars, but it is suggested that a newcomer only goes to these places once they get to know the city and the activities available. There are a lot of single people who are professionals there for a contracted period. They are generally conservative and meet at prearranged functions.
Are there any unique networking opportunities for accompanying partners?
The list of things for spouses to do is almost endless. Apart from the group meetings mentioned above, it is common for spouses to visit the islands near Dar es Salaam, enjoy the sunshine and eat freshly cooked fish and chips. The sporting activities are limited, but if golf, tennis and cricket are among your fancies, then there are active social events. There is a bowling alley at the Sea Cliff Hotel on the Peninsular and scuba diving and sailing are popular activities on the weekends.
