Osaka, climbed six positions, came in third place on the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2018 ranking of the world’s most liveable cities, whereas Tokyo came in seventh place. They achieved its highest ranking on the survey this year due to decline in crime rates and public transportation improvements. More than 1,400 years old, Osaka is a city built for commerce and industry. It is the third-largest city in Japan, with a population of 2.7 million, and is home to 30 of the world's top 500 corporations.

The city and the surrounding region accounts for 25 percent of the country's industrial production and 40 percent of the nation's exports. Many foreign consulates are located in Osaka. The pace of living is a little less hectic there than in Tokyo.
