Are there any vaccinations I should get or other health precautions to take as I prepare for my move to your city?
Not required, but it is advisable to be vaccinated against hepatitis A and B. Generally speaking, though, Oman is a country with a low risk of infectious disease.
Before I get sick, what should I know about seeking medical care in your city as an expat?
If you don’t have a local health card, it is best to opt for a private clinic or hospital, where payments are made in cash. Insurance claims can be made afterward with the receipt.
What is the word for "doctor" in the local language?
What is the best way to locate a suitable health care provider?
Warsaw has a variety of professional medical care centers and clinics. Generally, you can be referred to a provider by your employer. You may also consult with chambers of commerce.
Do expats in the area tend to leave the city/area/country to seek medical care? If so, why and where do they go?
The general standard of healthcare in Oman is high, both in the public and private sectors. As in most countries, private health care is seen as preferable (English-speaking staff, shorter waiting lists and more comfortable in-patient facilities), which is lucky for expats as they are only permitted to use private hospitals, except in cases of medical emergencies or in instances where private hospitals do not have the necessary facilities for treatment.
What is the number to call to summon help in an emergency? List medical/fire/police.
In case of emergency, call 9999.
What do I do if there's an emergency in the middle of the night—or at another time when my normal doctor/clinic is unavailable?
Muscat Private Clinic and The Royal Hospital have 24-hour emergency service.
How will I recognize a pharmacy? What is it called in the local language?
Pharmacies have a clear sign in English; the term used is "saydaliyeh."
Is the water safe to drink?
Oman’s water is safe to drink as it is purified eight times. However, it is heavily chlorinated (which affects taste) so most people prefer to drink one of the many locally bottled mineral waters. A filter is recommended; otherwise, use bottled water. Water dispenser machines are available for large (10 gallon) bottles.
