Are there any vaccinations I should get or other health precautions to take as I prepare for my move to your city?
Not required, but it is advisable to be vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B. Generally speaking, though, Qatar is a country with a low risk of infectious disease.
Before I get sick, what should I know about seeking medical care in your city as an expat?
If you don’t have a local health card, it is best to opt for a private clinic or hospital, where payments are made in cash. Insurance claims can be made afterward with the receipt.
What is the word for "doctor" in the local language?
What is the best way to locate a suitable health care provider?
You can visit and check out the facilities at the private clinics and hospitals as well as the government hospitals. You will also find listings in the Yellow Pages. Popular private clinics include: Doha Clinic Hospital, American Hospital and Polyclinic. Government clinics include: Hamad Hospital and Rumeilah Hospital. Government health centers can be found in each district and have a distinct green hexagonal “lollipop” sign. Your choice of health center depends on the district you reside in.
Do expats in the area tend to leave the city/area/country to seek medical care? If so, why and where do they go?
Medical care is of a high standard and there is no need to go elsewhere. For pregnant women, check-ups and prenatal care are no problem, but post-natal care is unfortunately minimal. Most expat women prefer to do their delivery at a private hospital where husbands are allowed to be present during delivery and the after-care is better than at the government hospital.
What is the number to call to summon help in an emergency? List medical/fire/police.
In case of any emergency, call 999.
What do I do if there's an emergency in the middle of the night—or at another time when my normal doctor/clinic is unavailable?
Hamad Hospital and Doha Clinic Hospital have 24-hour emergency service.
How will I recognize a pharmacy? What is it called in the local language?
Pharmacies have a clear sign in English.
Is the water safe to drink?
Tap water is quite safe but not necessarily appealing; it may contain rust and sand. A filter is recommended; otherwise, use bottled water. Water dispenser machines are available for large (10-gallon) size bottles.
