Moving from the Netherlands to Australia
February 3, 2016
If you’re looking for somewhere new and exciting to live, Australia could be the destination for you. Whether you prefer the wide open spaces of the great outdoors or the bustling street of a city, Australia can offer it, with a mix of urban and suburban lifestyles.
Easy to settle in
The primary language is Australia is English, so if you’re among the 90-93% of English speakers in the Netherlands then you’ll have an easy enough time breaking any language barriers. As for sports interests, if you aren’t big on cricket or rugby, you might want to brush up on your Australian football rules. Work and play are finely balanced, as Australia boasts over 20 years of economic growth, low unemployment and low inflation.
There are others like you
If you’re worried about being the only expat in your area, don’t be. According to the ABS (Australian Board of Statistics) over a quarter of Australia’s population was born overseas, and a further 20% had at least one parent that was an expat. To celebrate the increasingly diverse culture, Australia celebrates ‘Harmony Day’ on the 21st of March which centres on the message that everyone belongs.
Getting a visa
Securing work in Australia before applying for a visa is advisable, as immigration policies are becoming increasingly tight after the overwhelming number of people trying to relocate. To learn more about Australian visas click here.
