A new life in America is appealing to many but as with any relocation it is a good idea to consider the changes you will face before your move. We looked at some relocating to America tips you may not be aware of.
US healthcare system
Like here in the Netherlands you will need health insurance as an expat living in America. Make sure that you have full and comprehensive medical insurance when you relocate and not just travellers cover for holidays. Having full and comprehensive cover will stop you from running the risk of getting into debt with medical bill.
As one of the richest countries in the world America can provide anyone looking to relocate a great standard of living. In terms of property however the cost of living in major cities can be significantly higher that more rural areas. If you are willing to relocate outside of the bigger cities you will find that you can get a lot for your money property wise.
Unlike the Netherlands America is so large that the common weather varies depending on which part of the country you are relocating to. The east coast can summer from hurricanes and monsoons between August and October and be mild the rest of the year. In comparison to the deep south which has very little rain annually and can have muggy hot summers lasting for months.
The voltage of appliances in the Netherlands is between 220-240 volts and 110 volts in America. Consider not bringing your electronics with you when you relocate.
Obtain a drivers licence
Unless you are relocating to a major city like New York a driving licence and a car will be necessary. Look into obtaining your driving license as soon as possible to help you be mobile as quickly as possible when you arrive. You may be without a car for some time when you arrive as you obtain your license and car so consider finding a place to live close to work for a simple commute.
