How well-equipped is this city for those raising infants/toddlers? Specifically, are there public places to change diapers, maintained playgrounds, etc?

We are very well equipped and child friendly. Lots of restrooms (both men's and women's) have diaper changing stations. There are plenty of well-maintained parks designed with kids in mind, playground equipment and sand boxes for children to enjoy and large grassy areas for them to run to their heart's content.

What are the most popular kid-friendly attractions in the area?

Los Angeles is very child friendly! Between amusement parks, zoos, water parks, museums, aquariums and family outdoor activities no child (or parent) will ever be bored! Many of the parks have specially designated kid’s areas within their own parks, Toon Town at Disneyland, Looney Toon Park at Six Flags and Camp Snoopy at Knotts cater to the little ones, featuring miniature rides and attractions scaled down for their enjoyment. You can hike or bike one of the many trails throughout the area, have a picnic at the park, or learn to surf the ocean together as a family.

What are the most popular activities for kids after school or on weekends?

Many schools offer after school activities, as well as some local YMCA or Boys and Girls Clubs. Many kids join local sports teams (PeeWee Football, AYSO Soccer Club and Basketball Camp), and almost all the Moms and Dads become involved in LA's infamous car-pooling schedules, wherein one parent drives all the kids and they take turns rotating the drop off schedule.

Being a teenager in California is just like being a teenager anywhere else, except the weather is probably nicer. Parents need to be aware of their teenager just as they would anywhere else. Teens here like hanging out at the shopping malls and movies and the beach.

I want my child to get the most out of our stay in this country. Are there any specific opportunities to teach young people about the local culture?

The best way for anyone to learn the culture is to jump in and live it. There are always festivals going on the whole family can enjoy. From the Strawberry Festival in spring to The Los Angeles and Orange County Fairs in the summer to the return of the swallows to San Juan Mission in Capistrano, there are many ways to learn about California's vast and interesting history. Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) is enjoyed as a tribute to the city's strong ties with our Mexican history, and the Chinese New Year is celebrated with as much joy and color in Chinatown as it would be if you were in Beijing! Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day are feted in grand style as a tribute to the city's American heritage.
