What are the top factors to keep in mind when searching for a place to live in your city?
Finding the perfect accommodations in Saudi Arabia can be difficult. You will need to clearly decide what is important to you and your family in terms of cost, location and space. Most foreign workers live in apartments in compounds rather than houses. Some are equipped with swimming pools, restaurants, shops, gyms, etc. The rooms are usually large and you will have a garage or car port for vehicles.
What are the most popular neighborhoods in your city for expats?
Some people recommend Dammam and Jeddah as the best places for expatriates. Expat compounds allow some freedom from the strict rules that govern the sexes in Saudi Arabia.
Do expats tend to buy or rent their homes?
Many expats live in serviced apartments that offer the comforts of indoor parking, child care services, security and business centers. It's not uncommon for some to live in these homes for up to a year before any consideration for buying is made. The accommodations in Saudi Arabia are modern and comfortable.
Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?
You or your sponsor or spouse might be required to pay a deposit to cover damages.
Are utilities generally included in the price of rent, or are they extra?
Air conditioning is sometimes part of the rental cost and in other cases it will be separate and billed as part of the electricity charge. Other utilities will also be separate charges.
(A one-bedroom apartment will cost between $750 and $1000, while a three-bedroom apartment is between $1500 - $1800).
Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?
You are encouraged to keep a low profile. Avoid staying in hotels or compounds that do not have adequate security. Be cautious while driving and be sure to keep your travel documents updated/valid.
I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?
It is probably safer to not take your o own appliances.
- Frequency (Hz): 60
- Plugs could be Type A, B, F, or G.
Do you have any other accommodation information that might help me?
Find an estate agent (usually the wife of an expat) who knows the area and can show you safe compounds to live in.
