Most expatriates prefer to send their children to reputed international (private) schools. It is recommended that you begin your school search at the review trip and finalize so that there is no delay in enrolling your children to schools.

What are some examples of these schools?
There are 4-5 international schools in and around Colombo. The most popular is the Overseas School of Colombo. Others are Colombo International School and Asian International School.

Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?
There are many International Schools that are able to cater to both local and foreign children, though it is always better to check their availability early. Gateway International, Lyceum International, Stafford International College, Wycherly International School are some of the top ended International schools.

Are pre-schools also widely available (for children approx. 2 to 5 years old)?
For younger children there are numerous private play-schools and kindergartens in almost every area, some of which are run according to the Montessori method. These schools vary greatly in both fees and quality.

How are most kids transported to and from school?
Most expatriates prefer dropping and picking up their kids personally or through a chauffeur. The majority of local parents send their children in school transport buses or vans, though sometimes pooling arrangements are made as well.
