Moscow Transport

Will I need to drive my own vehicle to conduct my everyday life (work/school/shopping) at my destination?
No, as you can get a driver very easily and inexpensively. The public transportation system is very efficient although the metro is quite busy during rush hour.

How can I legally drive a vehicle in this city?
Your current license will be valid here, assuming you get it translated into Russian. Ask Crown Moscow for further information on where to get that done. Officially, it is not possible for foreigners to obtain a Russian driver's license unless they have Russian citizenship.

Describe typical public transportation an expat might use to get around the city.
Trolleybuses and the Metro are your best bet for public transportation. Trolleybuses drive above ground and sometimes have very long routes, which can be interesting for newcomers. The Metro has many stops throughout the city, some of which are widely held to be among the most beautiful subway stations in the world. Another option is the “route taxi;” these are more expensive than other forms of public transportation, but you will always get a seat and only have to stop when a person needs to get off.

Could an expat also use public transportation to get out of the city—to surrounding towns, recreation areas or suburbs? If so, list options.
Trains or buses; trains are efficient and cheap but they also get very full.

In regards to transportation, are there any safety issues I should be aware of?
Other than the occasional mechanical breakdown, Moscow's public transit is fairly safe. However, car drivers are not very polite as a general rule; do not expect them to let you go if you’re crossing the road in front of them.

Where do I buy tickets/tokens/etc. for the major public transportation?
If you're riding the Metro or the bus, you can purchase your tickets on the vehicle. If you're traveling by train, you can obtain your tickets in the station. Also, for buses, trolleys or trams, you can purchase tickets in small booths at some of the bus stops.
