Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?
The local schools are subordinated and financed by government. Children are allocated to the basic school that belongs to their area of residence. There is no competition, but also no freedom of decision. It is possible to join a private school. Munich does not have many private schools, therefore there is competition for spots.

Is there anything else I should know about local schools?
The school system starts with primary school for children from 6 to 9 years. After this time, the school system is divided into three types of secondary schools: The secondary modern school, the junior high school and the gymnasium. Children have to choose after primary school (the decision is also based on merit), but the system also allows students to change schools at certain times.
