Will I need to drive my own vehicle to conduct my everyday life (work/school/shopping) at my destination?
Thanks to an extensive public transportation network, you do not need to drive your own vehicle. Taxis, minibuses or city buses provide convenient transportation. Traffic is not as heavy as in other big cities in China, like Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing. Some expats in Shenzhen and Shekou buy their own cars, but most drive motorbikes or motor scooters. You must have a license to drive any vehicle in China.

How can I legally drive a vehicle in this city?
You need to obtain a Chinese driver's license before you can legally drive in China. An international driving permit is not accepted in China. To obtain a license, you must apply at an accredited organization in Hong Kong and complete written and practical driving tests in Zhuhai, Zhongshan or Guangzhou. Crown Shenzhen/Shekou can assist you with obtaining a license.

Describe typical public transportation an expat might use to get around the city.
Taxis are the most frequently used form of transport for expats because they are the most convenient and relatively inexpensive. Minibus drivers tend to drive a bit recklessly, but you can also take the larger city bus to travel to the city. City buses are equipped with soft seats and air-conditioning, making them not only economical and safe but also comfortable.

Could an expat also use public transportation to get out of the city—to surrounding towns, recreation areas or suburbs? If so, list options.
There are long-distance buses to the surrounding towns. They are economical, safe, comfortable and frequent, normally leaving every half hour. You also can take a train to surrounding areas, but this may be less convenient for Shekou residents because the train station is located in downtown Shenzhen, which is over 30 minutes from Shekou.

In regards to transportation, are there any safety issues I should be aware of?
You should be aware of the traffic conditions in Shenzhen and Shekou. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are accustomed to going where they want to go without looking. It is important to never assume that someone has seen you. Whether driving or on foot, proceed defensively, especially in the first few weeks of your assignment while you are getting used to the local habits.

Where do I buy tickets/tokens/etc. for the major public transportation?
People in Shenzhen and Shekou generally pay cash when they use the city or long-distance bus. There is a stored-value bus card system, but it is not available on most buses. Train tickets can be bought at the train station or through travel agents. Most expats prefer the long-distance bus over the train because it is more convenient.
