What are some examples of these schools?
Since Ulaanbaatar is small, most expats’ children go to the International School of Ulaanbaatar. This is a secondary school with Canadian management. Other choices are the American School of Ulaanbaatar and the British School of Ulaanbaatar.

Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?
No, but early reservations are highly encouraged.

Are pre-schools also widely available (for children approx. 2 to 5 years old)?
Young expat children usually stay at home with a parent, as Mongolian childcare centers are often not suitable to the tastes of expats.

Some expats hire babysitters or other domestic workers to help out with the children.

The school year is from September 1 to late May.
