The important considerations before deciding on a place to live will be: proximity to work, school and friends as well as frequently used highways, malls and entertainment venues. Other factors will have bearing on your choices depending on your lifestyle. If you like quiet surroundings look for a home further away from the city.
Austin is a city of diverse neighborhoods offering everything from the sleepy communities to the storefront-and-apartment neighborhoods that have more traffic and activities. Some of the more popular areas include:
A well-to-do area that has become a little more costly over the years, but offers a lot of space.
One of the most popular areas; and one of Austin's first settlements on the southern end.
A historic neighborhood bordered by Lady Bird Lake to the north and interstate 35 on the east.
West Lake Hills:
One of the city's most prestigious addresses, offering views of the Hill Country in one direction, and the Austin skyline in the other. It's fairly close to downtown Austin as well as the lakes.
Some expats who are on short-term assignments prefer to rent their accommodations. Others on long-term assignments prefer to rent their accommodations for the initial year, make themselves familiar with the area and then make a purchase when they are better able to choose a suitable location. Still there are those who purchase immediately because they perceive housing to be very affordable in Austin.
Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?
You will more than likely be required to furnish a deposit. The typical deposit is equal to one month's lease or rent but this can vary.
Although there are a few all-inclusive housing options available, utilities are typically not included. Some rentals might include water or gas, but you'll be responsible for other utility charges.
Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?
If you decide to rent an apartment, consider communities that are gated for maximum security. Many single-family homes and some apartments have security systems that are monitored by the local police and fire departments. These provide a deterrent to intrusions or other problems you might encounter.
I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?
The electric current in the United States is 110 volts. The electrical Hertz (Hz) is 60.
Do note: Although there are converters available, it is not recommended that you carry appliances from overseas because even with a converter the appliance might not function properly.
Below are examples of the types of plugs that are used in the U.S:
Type A - Flat blade attachment plug
Type B - Flat blades with round grounding pin
