Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?
Some schools are not selective and will accept any child in the right age range. Many schools administer tests in English and mathematics to determine the child's learning level but they also use previous school reports to make the determination. You should contact the respective schools to get information specific to your child's status.

Are pre-schools also widely available (for children approx. 2 to 5 years old)?
Early childhood education at both private and public facilities are available in Saudi Arabia. Depending on the area you're living in there might be one or many.

Children use private transportation or school buses to get to school.

When does the typical school year start and end?
With some exceptions, the normal school year begins in August and ends in June. It is divided into two semesters: September to December and January to June.

It is important to apply well in advance. For foreign schools, priority is given to people holding a foreign passport of the same nationality of the school.
