What are the most popular neighborhoods in your city for expats?
The most popular neighborhoods for foreigners are Zhuhai and nearby Guangzhou.
Like Shenzhen, Zhuhai is a special economic zone. It is beautiful and even more quiet that Shenzhen and Shekou. Zhuhai has many villas and high-rise apartments; popular residential developments include Golf Villas and Seaview Garden, where many expatriates live or have even purchased property.

Guangzhou, previously called Canton, is more crowded than Shenzhen and Zhuhai because it is the capital of Guangdong Province. Also, called the "flower city" or "goat city," Guangzhou is lively and hosts major business exhibitions throughout the year.

Do expats tend to buy or rent their homes?
Most expats prefer to rent their homes. However, those that intend to live in the area long-term or even permanently often purchase their homes.

Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?
Yes, normally a deposit of one or two months' rent is required.

Are utilities generally included in the price of rent, or are they extra?
Generally, utilities are not included in the rental price. However, it is sometimes possible to negotiate this.

Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?
Most compounds are guarded. Burglary is not a common crime in Shenzhen or Shekou.

I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?
The electric current in China is 220 volts. The electrical Hertz (Hz) is 50. The official plug type is similar to Type A, but slightly shorter and without holes in blades. Type A and I outlets are common and Type G might also be found.

Below are examples of the types of plugs used in China:
