Driving your own vehicle in Dhaka can be very challenging since it is a small city with lots of traffic and the roads get tricky due to increased amount of vehicles. Expatriates generally prefer to be driven in chauffeur-driven vehicles.

To drive in Bangladesh, one must have an international driving license.

What side of the road do people drive on?
In Dhaka, drivers drive on the left side of the road. If you are not familiar with this, please drive with extreme caution.

Describe typical public transportation an expat might use to get around the city.
Auto Rickshaw or CNG Rickshaw are the only options to travel within the city as Bangladesh doesn’t have a well-developed transportation network.

Could an expat also use public transportation to get out of the city—to surrounding towns, recreation areas or suburbs? If so, list options.
It is possible to take public transit out of the city but it is not advisable since they are overcrowded and not safe. For short journeys, taxis and rickshaws are a much better choice.

In regards to transportation, are there any safety issues I should be aware of?
Expats should be aware of using public transport after evening. Always fix your price before getting on the transport vehicle. If it has meter it is advisable to check if it works.

None. Most are cash only transport.
