What are the items that I should bring with me because they’re not available (or are too expensive) where I am going?
Because Hong Kong is an international city, expats normally do not have difficulty finding the items that they would like to buy in Hong Kong. The prices of personal care products, groceries and daily necessities are reasonable. However, it is a good idea to purchase some universal or Hong Kong adapters (220V, 50Hz) before or upon arrival in Hong Kong so you can use your laptops or charge your mobile phones as soon as nee them.

Expats may also rent furniture in Hong Kong to avoid shipping large furniture from their home country. This is also a good idea because furniture from abroad may not fit into apartments in Hong Kong. Also, keep in mind that many expats like to purchase antique furniture and ship it back at the end of their assignment.

Will anyone have particular trouble finding clothes that fit?
Sizes from local shops are petite. However, expats will be able to buy foreign brand clothing, such as Marks and Spencers, Zara, H&M and COS. The big-name fashion labels can also be found in HK.

In addition, expats often enjoy looking for bargains at outlet shops, which stock over-runs or slightly damaged labels for export. These places carry clothing in all sizes.

The same applies for shoes, as most local shops do not stock anything larger than a European size 40. THere are some overseas department stores deliver to Hong Kong, therefore expats may consider to shop online.

What grocery stores do expats in your city shop at?
There are two major supermarket chains in Hong Kong: Welcome and PARKnSHOP. Expats can easily find a branch within their neighborhood. These supermarkets normally cater to their needs, and carry a good range of products imported from the USA and Europe, in addition to local staples.

Expats who would like to purchase more specialized groceries that may not be easily found in the above supermarkets might try Great at Pacific Place, Citysuper at Times Square and IFC, Threesixty in Elements. Market Place can be found at Nexxus Building, The Peak, Langham Place, Tseung Kwan O, Olympic and Gold Coast Piazza.
Local delivery of groceries is common in HK. Depending on the supermarket, spending around HK$500 or more usually entitles a shopper to have purchases delivered to the home.

Where can other household items (such as cleaning materials and home furnishings) be found?
Cleaning materials and supplies can easily be found in local supermarkets or department stores. Some specialty brands may not be available, but substitutes can be found.

For home furnishings, many expats explore furniture shops in Queen’s Road East. These specialize in Chinese antique and/or reproduction furniture. Another popular place to purchase home furnishings is Horizon Plaza in Ap Lei Chau, an industrial building with floors of furniture and furnishings.

IKEA's large outlet is found in Shatin and Megabox. But a smaller store can be found in Causeway Bay. Local furnishing stores include Banyan Tree, Indigo and Tequila Kola in Ap Lei Chau, and GOD (Goods of Desire) with stores in Causeway Bay, Central and Sai Kung. For genuine antiques, furniture, crafts and art, Hollywood Road is still the popular choice.

What are factors that might affect my shopping habits in this country/city?
Hong Kong residents buy fresh meat and vegetables from local food markets or "wet markets." This is truly an experience for those who have only seen pre-packed foods. Here, live fish and fowl can be selected, prepped and cleaned. Veggies and fruits can be selected and bought in any quantity.
Expats do patronize these local food markets, as they may find fresher food at lower prices than at the supermarkets.

The Fa Yuen street market in Mong Kok is a great we market to visit, with different varieties of fresh food and vegetables in cheap prices, it is a great destination to experience the unique Hong Kong lifestyle and culture.
