Will I need to drive my own vehicle to conduct my everyday life (work/school/shopping) at my destination?

Most Hawaiians would agree that having your own vehicle for everyday life is a necessity. While there is bus transportation available on most islands, the mass transit system is not as well developed as that of more pedestrian cities like New York.

How can I legally drive a vehicle in this city?

Generally, a valid foreign driver's license in addition to your valid passport will allow you to drive in Hawaii for one year, upon first entering. You will need to have auto insurance (liability insurance) for the vehicle you are driving. If you have an out-of-state license and are 18 or older, you may drive in Hawaii. We recommend that you get a copy of the Hawaii Driver's Manual, available at most stores island-wide.

The bus systems are comprised of local, commuter and shuttle routes. Weekly, monthly and yearly passes are available for all services.

Yes it is possible to ride the bus around the island on Oahu. To get to the other islands or the mainland you would have to purchase an airline ticket. The super ferry currently operates between Oahu and Maui.

In regards to transportation, are there any safety issues I should be aware of?

Become acquainted with local roads and freeways as well as local traffic rules. Always follow these traffic rules and always drive with the flow of traffic. The good thing is, you can't really get lost (just head for the ocean). You will probably be surprised by how polite other drivers are. It is worth noting that locals do not take kindly to aggressive driving.
